Haslar Marina 7 November 2015, afternoon
Prophets of doom ended the rally content, as all the potential problems of getting to and from Chichester by sea materialised to challenge HOEOCA crews. Five crews made it into the Chichester Marina with careful passage planning. Some did manage to look at the sea state at the ‘West Pole’, guarding the bar, before deciding on preserving boats and crew. So four crews sought refuge elsewhere. We were all restricted by some pretty fierce weather including persistent rain and a southerly wind gusting to gale force.
Despite the elements, some lively sailing in a Solent mainly empty of boats, was to be enjoyed on all but the Saturday. Novice skippers, mates and navigators battled to keep one step ahead of the conditions. Marinas such as Haslar, Cowes and Yarmouth proved popular for those not sneaking into Chichester early to avoid the need for a taxi.
HOEOCA crusaders at Chichester Yacht Club 6 November 2015
The travails were soon forgotten when a warm welcome was extended by Chichester Yacht Club on their Upper Deck. Was a Crusade imminent as knights, priests, nuns and monarchs gathered to discuss their next move? Constantinople or Party Boat, hero or casualty? Say no more. Our Commodore, Judy, had the crews parade before Simon, Rear Commodore Yachts at Chichester, to allow him to judge the ‘Board Games’ fancy dress winning team. He was soon converted to the HOEOCA cause. The victors will be announced at the Laying Up Supper. Members agreed we would return to CYC with fair wind and tide.
Rally members remain grateful to the skippers, mentors and boat owners who allow such a large gathering to assemble on the south coast. Plans for the Channel Islands from Friday 27 May to Friday 3 June are now being made, so keep the dates.
